As part of A Long Night of Music '23 – Music + Dance, Text, Art, and Light at the Rudolf-Oetker-Halle in Bielefeld, this concert presents an interactive composition that brings unexpected sounds into an entirely new light. The dialogue between accordion and light unfolds on multiple levels.
I created dynamic visuals through projection mapping, providing a visual counterpart to the sounds played by accordionist Katharina Koenig - transforming, contrasting, or supporting them in real time.
At the heart of this performance lies Elusive Dialogues, a solo accordion piece by Conrado del Rosario. Through improvisational elements, this work extends beyond sound, merging both visual and auditory dimensions. What happens at the intersection of listening and seeing? How do we perceive and interpret these interactions? Exploring the parallels between light and shadow, sound and resonance, this performance creates and captures fleeting moments of artistic dialogue.
At the beginning of the concert, two LED light bars attempt to communicate with each other—controlled via two MIDI keyboards, played by me like a visual piano. The visuals that follow respond dynamically to the highs and lows of the music, offering a real-time visual feedback loop. This allows the accordionist to engage in an interactive dialogue with the visuals, responding and reacting to the evolving imagery.
"Our destiny is not frightening because it is unreal; it is frightening because it is irreversible and unyielding. Time is a river that carries me away, but I am the river; it is a tiger that devours me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire that consumes me, but I am the fire."
